If you are ready to take on the journey of cooking, there are a few tools need before you can start crafting wonderful dishes. As a beginner, you may feel a little lost to what tools are necessary and which are not. To not leaving you in the dark, here are a few essential tools that every beginner cook needs.

10-inch Stainless Steel Skillet

Stainless steel pans won’t stain or chip like non-stick pans and aren’t as hard to care for. Stainless steel pans are little more expensive but they can last well over two decades.

Chef Knife

A good size for a chef’s knife is between 8″ to 10″ inches. Don’t invest in a chef knife that is overly expensive You can pick up a $20 chef’s knife at any restaurant store, and once it becomes dull you can easily just pick up another one.

Cutting Board

When looking for cutting boards find one that is comprised of a hard wood like walnut, hickory, or oak. You will want it to be at least 2 inches thick to avoid warping when it’s wet. If you don’t want to go the wood route, try a ¾” bamboo cutting board. If you can try to avoid glass or plastic cutting boards, they can damage your knives and get slippery. The one exception for getting a plastic cutting board is if you are using it as a designated meat board. It will be far easier to clean than a wooden one.

Mixing Bowls

It will be hard to make a cake or really anything without a mixing bowl. You will find that bowls come in a variety of materials, but if you can try getting glass ones. By far they are the easiest to clean and are dishwasher safe!

Measuring Cups & Spoons

When you are baking, the last thing you will want to do is just eyeball ingredients. Without exact measurements, your recipe can go terribly wrong. Look for a set that isn’t too bulky and can easily fit into the containers of your ingredients.

Can Opener

Whether you decide to go electric or manual, this tool is a must-have. Without it, you won’t be able to open canned goods very easily.

Colander

When it comes time to washing vegetables or drain pasta, you will want a colander on hand. You don’t have to spend much money on this, a plastic one will get the job done just fine.
